Interview with Shane Hannam, Portfolio Director, IBTM Events

 

How did you get into the events industry?

I took a job in financial conference sales straight after university, and from there I joined the international sales team at Reed Exhibitions, working across multiple events and industries. In 2006 I moved to Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) - my first introduction to the meetings industry. I spent six years as a Sales Manager before joining Gartner as Account Manager for 14 months. I then re-joined RTE and have been there ever since.

Favourite thing about events?

Our industry is all about establishing a platform for people to achieve their objectives, and I love meeting people and seeing those connections happen.

What do you think you can bring to the role?

Significant experience in the industry – I’ve been with IBTM for over ten years and have worked across the Reed portfolio as well as with some of the most high-profile industry figures. I have a deep understanding of our customers too, their objectives and how we can help them meet them.

What will you do in the first month in the job?

Make a thorough evaluation of the requirements for the delivery of events. I also want to meet as many of our customers as possible to really get under the skin of what our industry needs, as well as working closely with our partners in the wider industry. I have the benefit of knowing our team here already, but I’ll be spending more time with them to assess how we can best deliver events the industry needs.

First job of the day?

Make coffee! Then I catch up with the team to understand their needs for the day and how this fits into the wider picture.

What's on your desk?

We’re about to move to an agile office so I have nothing on my desk at the moment. I normally keep lots of industry papers, magazines and photographs on my desk, so this is a real lesson in change management for me!

How do you intend to face the challenges in the industry?

Our business is only ever going to be a representation of the industry we’re in. It’s our job to develop our events to serve the industry, and make sure the team understand the challenges and work together to solve them. My focus will be very much about immersion in the industry and improving the customer experience.

Biggest frustration?

There’s been significant improvement over the years, but my biggest frustration is demonstrating to central government the important role the events industry plays in the economy, and trying to get as much exposure as possible for our industry.

Crowning moment?

This may sound cheesy, but it’s about to happen! I’ve always dreamt of having this job as I worked under various portfolio directors over the years.

Best piece of advice?

Do the best job that you can, regardless of how big or small the task is.  The quality of your work represents who you are - every time.
