• The conferences, meetings and events industry has more than its fair share of organisations known only by their initials - many are acronyms that have become part of the day-to-day vernacular of professionals in the industry. Fine if you’re down with the latest events lingo, but if the phrase, “RX’s IBTM is supported by DMCs, NTOs as well SITE, ICCA and IAPCO and many more MICE associations,” leaves you feeling a little light-headed, then you might want to read on; this jargon-busting list provides just the clarification you need.
  • Industry associations


    ABPCO – Association of British Professional Conference Organisers

    Formed to facilitate, advise, mentor and offer guidance to those seeking the essential quality standards required to deliver a professional event. One of very few UK conference and event industry associations to select Full and Associate Members based on peer assessment


    AIPC – International Association of Convention Centres

    An industry trade association for professional convention and exhibition centre managers globally. The association exists to promote and recognise excellence in convention centre management and provide the means for its members to achieve it, through research, educational and networking programmes.


    ECM – European Cities Marketing

    European Cities Marketing (ECM) is a trade association whose members consist of tourist boards, convention bureaux and city marketing organisations located in Europe.


    EMA – Event Marketing Association

    The Event Marketing Association (EMA) is a non-profit UK trade association which operates exclusively for corporate in-house event professionals (planners and marketers).



    IACC (previously the International Association of Conference Centers) is a global association dedicated to delivering innovative and exceptional meeting experiences. IACC helps with marketing, education, networking and benchmarking and includes over 350 member conference venues.


    IACVB – Destination Marketing Association

    Destinations Marketing Association and International Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus (IACVB) are both former names of Destinations International, a professional organisation representing destination organisations and convention and visitor bureaus worldwide. The association provides members with educational resources, networking opportunities and marketing benefits.


    IAPCO – The International Association of Professional Congress Organisers

    A member-based organisation comprising of conference organising and meeting planning companies. The overall aim of the organisation and its members is to collectively raise standards and to provide quality assurances.


    ICCA – International Congress and Convention Association

    The global community and knowledge hub for the international association meetings industry. The association represents suppliers in handling, transporting and accommodating international meetings and events.


    ILEA – International Live Events Association

    ILEA’s mission is to ensure a thriving and global creative events profession by providing its members and stakeholders with collaborative networking, education and professional development, inspiration and outward awareness and credibility.


    JMIC – Joint Meetings Industry Council

    The Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC) seeks to provide a communications link amongst international associations engaged in the meetings industry and a means of collectively reviewing industry conditions and strategies.


    MIA – Meeting Industry Association

    An association which supports the business meetings and events industry in the UK. MIA offers its members research and training and networking opportunities to help them grow and strengthen their business. MIA also operates AIM, an accreditation scheme for the meetings and events industry.


    MPI – Meetings Professional International

    The largest meeting and event industry association worldwide. It provides education, networking opportunities and business exchanges, and acts as a voice for the industry. 


    PCMA – Professional Convention Management Association

    PCMA is a global association of business events strategists headquartered in Chicago, which seeks to inspire the global business events community through education, networking and knowledge sharing.


    SITE – Society for Incentive Travel Excellence

    A business events trade association dedicated exclusively to the global incentive travel industry.

    CIC – Convention Industry Council

    The former name of the Events Industry Council, a non-profit federation of U.S. and international organisations involved in the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry.


    NTO – National Tourism Organisation

    A National Tourist Organisation (NTO) is the government organisation responsible for the formulation and implementation of a country’s national tourist policy, and is engaged in the control, direction and promotion of tourism.

  • Geographical acronyms


    APAC – Asia Pacific

    A designation used to group the countries in the Western Pacific Ocean region, typically including much of East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania. It is a term most commonly used for business purposes.


    EMEA – Europe, Middle East and Africa

    EMEA is a designation used to group the countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, most commonly for business purposes.


    LATAM – Latin America

    A designation used to group the countries in Central and South America, most commonly for business purposes.


    MENA – Middle East, North Africa

    A designation used to group the countries in the Middle East and North Africa, most commonly for business purposes.

    AIME – Asia Pacific Incentives & Meetings Expo

    An international event for the meetings, incentives and events industry. The event is owned by Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) and hosted in the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.


    CIBTM – China Incentives and Business Travel and Meetings (CIBTM)

    IBTM’s annual international trade show in China – IBTM China – is locally known as CIBTM.



    IBTM’s flagship annual international trade show in Barcelona – IBTM World – was formerly known as EIBTM.



    IBTM’s annual international trade show in Dubai – IBTM Arabia – was formerly known as Gulf Incentives and Business Travel and Meetings (GIBTM).


    IBTM Events

    IBTM Events is the division of Reed Travel Exhibitions which organises trade events where meetings, events, conference and incentives industry decision makers from across the globe meet to do business. Events include: IBTM World, IBTM Arabia, IBTM China and IBTM Americas.


    IMEX Group

    IMEX runs two trade events per year for the meetings, events, conference and incentives industry – IMEX America, which takes place in Las Vegas, and IMEX, which takes place in Frankfurt. IMEX stands for Worldwide Exhibition for Incentive Travel, Meetings and Events.


    RX – Reed Exhibitions

    Reed Exhibitions is an events business which is part of the RELX Group. It organises over 500 events per year, in 30 countries, for more than 7 million participants, where the aim is to enable visitors to learn about a market, source products and complete business transactions.


    RTE – Reed Travel Exhibitions

    The travel division of Reed Exhibitions (see above).

    CVB – Convention & Visitor Bureau

    A Convention & Visitor Bureau (CVB) is a not for profit organisation responsible for representing a specific destination by offering a wide range of services within the destinations. These include marketing and promotion, arranging site inspections, checking hotel and meeting space availability, and linking those planning a visit to the destination with expert local service providers. 


    DMC – Destination Management Company

    A destination management company (DMC) is a private company that provides a ground service for the design and implementation of events, activities, tours, transportation and programme logistics within a certain destination. Using local knowledge, expertise and resources, DMCs assist with information and bookings for transportation, hotel accommodation, restaurants, activities, excursions, conference venues, themed events, gala dinners and logistics, meetings, incentive schemes. They also help their clients overcome regulatory, cultural and language differences.


    MICE – Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions

    An acronym for collecting the activities of the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions industries into a single industry - the MICE industry - often also known as just MICE or the Business Events Industry.
